WATERBURY, Conn.- The Caldwell University women's soccer team upset top seed Georgian Court University 2-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinals and advance to Saturday's championship game. The Cougars will play in their second championship in the past three seasons as they won the CACC Tournament in 2013.
The Cougars improve to 11-8-1 overall, while the Lions end their season at 15-3-2.
"As the game went on we stuck to what we wanted to do and we were rewarded," said Head Coach
Nate Guagliardi. "We played as a unit and we did not make it easy for them, and our seniors helped lead us to the victory."
The Lions struck first as they look an early lead in the contest as they netted a goal in the 28
th minute of play. The Cougars answered with 90 seconds left in the first half as freshman all-conference selection
Emily Valerian (Roseland, NJ) netted the equalizer for pull Caldwell even at 1-1. Valerian's sixth goal of the season came off an assist from freshman
Amanda Wroblewski (North Babylon, NY).
Caldwell nearly took the lead early in the second half but the Cougars penalty kick was saved and the score remained tied at 1-1. Senior
Ashley King (Little Egg Harbor, NJ) tallied the eventual game-winner in the 53
rd minute. Then Lions had six shots attempts over the final 37 minutes but freshman goalie
Mary Kanzler (East Northport, NY) was stellar in net as she posted two saves to thwart the Georgian Court comeback and punch Caldwell's ticket to the finals.
For King, it was her second goal of the season, with both goals being game-winners scores as she scored the winning goal against Holy Family on 11/24. Kanzler finished with four saves in the game.
Caldwell's season continues on Saturday, November 7 as they face #6 seed Philadelphia for the CACC Championship at 1:30 pm on the campus of Post University.
