CALDWELL, N.J.- Senior
Nicole Angelo (Mt. Laurel, NJ) scored a game-high 18 points but the Caldwell University women's basketball team fell to the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights 74-62 on Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars fall to 3-3 on the season, while the Purple Knights improve their mark to 2-4.
In the opening quarter, Caldwell jumped out in front 9-5 in the first four minutes of play, powered by four points from sophomore
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, MA). The Purple Knights rallied to take a one-point lead at 12-11 with 3:07 left in the quarter. The Cougars closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to pull ahead by eight points. Sophomore
Maura Kelty (Barrington, RI) connected on a triple, while sophomore
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, NY) added four points in the run to put Caldwell up 22-14 after one quarter of play.
The Cougars added to their lead in the second quarter, pushing their advantage to 10 points. Angelo netted a triple early in the quarter, while junior
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY) drained a trifecta to put Caldwell in the lead at 32-22 at the 5:52 mark. Saint Michael's chipped away late in the quarter and pulled even with under a minute to play as the score was tied at 37 at halftime.
The teams traded leads in the third quarter but the Cougars took a four-point lead at 49-45 at the 4:06 after an Angelo triple. The Purple Knights closed the gap and took a 54-50 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Caldwell rallied to start the final quarter as they scored the first five points to take a one point lead. Angelo drained a three-pointer, while
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, NJ) added a lay-up to put the Cougars up 55-54 at the 9:24 mark. The Purple Knights answered as they connected on a pair of triples as they took the lead at 68-60 lead with 3:28 left in the game. Drogsler connected on a jumper at the 3:13 mark but the Purple Knights went 4-for-4 at the line in the final minute to take the win.
For the Cougars, Angelo's 18 points led the way along with four assists. Drogsler posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards, while O'Driscoll tallied 16 points and nine rebounds. Pilla added 11 points, while Lennon chipped in four assists.
The Cougars are back on the hardwood on Wednesday, December 2 as they travel to Nyack College for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest at 5:30 pm.
