ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Caldwell University men's basketball team defeated Dominican College, 103-68 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the Hennessy Center. The victory is the 515th of head coach
Mark Corino's career, moving him ahead of Princeton coaching legend Pete Carril as the second-winningest men's college basketball coach all-time in New Jersey.
Corino, who became the third coach in New Jersey to win 500 games with a victory at USciences last season, now is 515-396 in his career, including a 420-348 mark at Caldwell. He ranks second all-time in the state behind current Richard Stockton College coach Gerry Matthews, who has 571 wins. Carril won 514 games in 29 years at Princeton.
The historic win was never in doubt, as Caldwell opened the game with a 21-6 run. Senior forward
Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) led the way with six points, while senior guard
Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) and juniors
Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy) and
Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT/North Haven) scored five points apiece. The Cougars maintained control of the game, shooting 57.1 percent from the field in taking a 53-29 halftime advantage. Balkovic tallied 18 points in the first half for Caldwell.
Dominican was unable to make much progress in the second half, coming as close as 22 points, as the Cougars shot an identical 57.1 percent from the floor after halftime. Caldwell hit 8-of-14 from three-point range for the game while making a season-high 31 free throws in 34 trips to the line (91.2 percent).
Balkovic ended up with a career-high 33 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field and a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. He also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. McDonald finished with 20 points, while Lighty also made all 11 of his free throws en route to 16 points. Freshman forward
Daniel Knight (Newark, NJ/Patrick School) was the fourth Cougar in double figures with a career-best 10 points. Joe Clinton led Dominican with 21 points.
The Cougars (9-7 overall, 5-3 CACC) host Dominican on Wednesday, Jan. 21 in their next game. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
