Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Basket Lifts Dominican Past Cougars, 72-70

CALDWELL, N.J. – A basket by Robert Hueston with 1.2 seconds on the clock gave Dominican College a 72-70 victory over the Caldwell University men's basketball team in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars fall to 9-8 overall and 5-4 in league play with the loss, while the Chargers improve to 6-11, 6-4 CACC.

With Caldwell trailing 70-65 at the 1:13 mark, a layup by senior guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) brought the Cougars to within two with less than a minute to play. After a missed shot by Dominican, junior guard Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy) was fouled while shooting a three-pointer. He hit all three free throws to tie the score at 70-70 with 26 seconds remaining. With time running down, Hueston put up a shot from 10 feet that hit the front of the rim and slowly rolled in with just 1.2 seconds on the clock. The Cougars were unable to get a shot off as time expired.

The dramatic finish overshadowed an outstanding performance by Lighty, who scored a career-high 34 points while making seven three-pointers and all nine of his free throws. Lighty was 5-of-5 from three-point range in the first half, as the Cougars took a 37-33 lead at the break. He also made his first two three-point attempts in the second half to start 7-of-7 from beyond the arc. Caldwell led by as many as seven points before Dominican used a 17-3 run midway through the second half to lead 59-52 with 8:36 remaining. The Cougars were able to tie the score twice before the Chargers built a five-point lead late, setting up the exciting finish.

Senior forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney), who had a career-high 33 points in Caldwell's 103-68 win at Dominican on Jan. 10, tallied 18 points and 13 rebounds in support of Lighty. Walker finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Hueston led Dominican with 22 points.

Caldwell hosts USciences in another CACC contest on Saturday, Jan. 24, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
