Caldwell Men’s Soccer Drops First Game to Merrimack, 3-1

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Caldwell University men's soccer team started the 2014 season at the Marriott Kickoff Classic with a 3-1 loss to host Merrimack College Thursday night at Martone-Mejail Field. The Cougars were 7-10-1 last season, while the Warriors are coming off a 13-4-2 campaign in 2013.

Merrimack opened the scoring in the 22nd minute on a goal by Augusto Silva for a 1-0 lead. In the 26th minute, junior midfielder Christian Castro (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) beat Warriors' goalkeeper Jose Silva with a shot from the right to tie the score at 1-1. Senior midfielder Tim Centineo (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) was credited with the assist.

Six minutes after halftime, Joseph Briers headed home a pass from Michael Rincon for the go-ahead goal. Alexander Alleyne scored an insurance goal in the 86th minute for a 3-1 advantage.

Junior goalkeeper Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) registered nine saves for Caldwell, including a dandy one-handed save in the second half on a header attempt by Alleyne from point-blank range. Jose Silva finished with one save.

The Cougars will play Bentley University on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1:00 p.m. on the final day of the Marriott Kickoff Classic.
