Caldwell Men’s Soccer Earns CACC Win Over No. 23 Wilmington, 2-1

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell University men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to beat 23rd-ranked Wilmington University, 2-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars are now 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while the Wildcats suffered their second straight loss to fall to 6-3, 3-2 CACC.

After a scoreless first half, junior midfielder Christian Castro (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) was fouled about 25 yards out to the left of the goal in the 51st minute. Castro took the ensuing free kick and beat Wilmington goalkeeper Zach Lee to put the Cougars on top, 1-0. Then in the 56th minute, Castro's corner kick found senior forward Evan Teitelbaum (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) on the far post. His shot hit the post, but senior forward Steve Petrosino (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) knocked in the rebound for a two-goal advantage.

The Wildcats were able to get on the scoreboard in the 66th minute on a goal by Josh Fawssett. But junior goalkeeper Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and the Caldwell defense made the one-goal lead stick, as the Cougars beat Wilmington for the first time since2010.

Hartmann finished with 10 saves for Caldwell, including seven in the second half. Lee ended up with six saves for the Wildcats.

Caldwell plays a CACC game at Post University on Tuesday, Sept. 30, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
