Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. – A goal by freshman
Sam Odell (Walton-On-Thames, England/Heathside) gave the Caldwell University men's soccer team a 1-0 triumph over visiting Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The win gives the Cougars a 4-2 record overall, including a 1-1 mark in conference play. The Chargers fall to 2-3, 1-2 CACC.
After a foul was called on Dominican at the top of the penalty area in the 15th minute, Odell stepped up and blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead. It was Odell's first collegiate goal. From that point on, Caldwell junior goalkeeper
Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and the Cougar defense kept the Chargers off the scoreboard despite several good scoring opportunities. Most of Hartmann's 12 saves were spectacular, including a diving save on Matheus Sousa in the 76th minute. Freshman defender
Patrick Grey (Auckland, New Zealand/Aukland Grammar) also made a save on the goal line on a shot by Manuel Valencia in the 31st minute.
Hartmann's 12 saves are a career high, allowing him to record his third shutout of the season and seventh of his career. Steven Hegnar tallied two saves in goal for Dominican, which held a 24-8 advantage in shots.
Caldwell hosts league-leading Concordia College on Wednesday, Sept. 24, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
