Box Score 2 CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team was swept by Chestnut Hill College, 7-3 and 2-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Tuesday at the Kiwanis Oval. The losses drop the Cougars to 1-13 overall and 0-6 in conference play, while the Griffins improve to 7-7, 4-0 CACC.
In the first game, Chestnut Hill scored twice in the first inning, three times in the third and two more in the sixth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Caldwell responded in the top of the seventh with three runs. A grounder by senior
Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) plated senior
Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea). Junior
Anthony Caruso (N. Babylon, NY/N. Babylon) tripled to score senior
Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham), then came home on a double by senior
Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph). But that's as close as the Cougars would get, as relievers Eric Tidwell and Vincent Manzella blanked Caldwell the rest of the way.
Dominic Raia earned the win with six scoreless innings for the Griffins. Junior
Joseph Saverino (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) started and took the loss, while sophomore
Ryan Langdon (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) tossed 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit.
The second game was a pitcher's dual between senior
Dan Bartlett (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) and Chestnut Hill's Zachary Crim, as neither team scored through seven innings. In the bottom of the eighth, the Griffins loaded the bases with two out for Patrick Campion. With a full count and the runners on the move, Campion hit a hard grounder up the middle that Nyitray snared deep behind second base, allowing two runs to score. Manzella retired the Cougars in order in the ninth to wrap up the win for Chestnut Hill.
Bartlett pitched all eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 10 and walking two. Nunez and junior
Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's) each had two hits for the Cougars.
Caldwell plays a non-conference game against Molloy College on Wednesday, Apr. 2, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval.
