CALDWELL, N.J. – Senior forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) and sophomore guard
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley) both scored over 30 points as the Caldwell University women's basketball team defeated Georgian Court University, 95-83 Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The victory gives the Cougars a 5-4 record on the season, including a 3-0 mark in league play. The Lions drop to 0-7, 0-4 CACC.
Caswell tallied a career-high 33 points, while Pilla had her best game as a Cougar with 31 points. This is the second game with 90 or more points this season for Caldwell, which tallied 91 points in its previous home game on Nov. 20 against Bridgeport.
Caldwell trailed for most of the first half, as Georgian Court built a 32-27 lead with 4:23 left in the period. The Cougars answered with a 13-4 run capped by a conventional three-point play from junior forward
Lisa Rovatsos (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) that put Caldwell up, 40-36 with 15 seconds left. Kiara Colston hit a jumper before time expired to make the halftime score 40-38. Rovatsos led Caldwell with 12 points and six rebounds in the first half.
The Cougars stayed in control of the game in the second half, pushing their lead to 11, 78-67 after a three from Pilla with 8:45 on the clock. That was the fourth three-pointer of the half for Pilla, who drained three in a three-minute span earlier in the half. The Lions came within six points twice, including 89-83 with 1:30 remaining. But they would get no closer, as Caldwell remained unbeaten in the CACC with their second conference win this week. The Cougars beat Bloomfield on the road, 77-70 in overtime on Wednesday.
Caswell scored 22 of her 33 points in the second half and grabbed 13 rebounds for the game. Caswell, who was honored before the game for scoring her 1,000th career point on Sunday, also grabbed 13 rebounds in the win. She now has seven double-doubles in nine games this season. Pilla tallied 25 of her 31 points after halftime while shooting 10-of-13 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range for the game. She also had a career-best six rebounds.
