Late Comeback Lifts Cougars Past Bloomfield in OT, 77-70

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Trailing by 10 points with five minutes remaining, the Caldwell University women's basketball team came back to defeat Bloomfield College on the road, 77-70 in overtime Wednesday night in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up. The Cougars improve to 2-0 in the conference and 4-4 overall, while the Bears drop to 2-3, 0-1 CACC.

Caldwell fell behind by as many as 14 points in the first half, as Bloomfield hit six threes in building a 34-24 halftime lead. The Cougars came as close as six points in the second half, only to have the Bears maintain a 10-point advantage as late as the 5:04 mark with the score 57-47. At that point, Caldwell began its comeback thanks in part to senior forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School), who scored eight points in a 17-7 run that tied the score at 64-64. A three by junior guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) with 23 seconds left completed the run. Angelo had a chance to give the Cougars the win following a Bloomfield turnover, but her three-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the rim.

Early in overtime, a pair of Caswell free throws and a three-pointer by Angelo put Caldwell on top, 71-66 with 3:33 on the clock. Two Bloomfield free throws were answered by a pair of freebies from sophomore guard Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley), and the Cougars closed out the game with four more free throws to complete the comeback victory. The win came in a rematch of last year's CACC Tournament final, won by Bloomfield.

Caldwell outscored the Bears 20-7 at the free throw line for the game to help offset nine threes by the hosts. Caswell finished with 26 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, including 17 on the defensive glass. Junior forward Lisa Rovatsos (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) tallied 16 points, nine boards and two steals, while Pilla had 14 points. Senior guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) contributed a season-high 10 assists to go with five points and two steals. Bloomfield was led by Ariel Wilson with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Cougars host Georgian Court University in another CACC game on Saturday, Dec. 6. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
