Cougar Men’s Soccer Earns CACC Win Over Griffins, 4-1

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell University men's soccer team picked up another Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 triumph over Chestnut Hill College at Caldwell Field. The win gives the Cougars a 6-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in conference play. The Griffins are now 4-5-1, 3-2-1 CACC.

Less than four minutes into the game, junior midfielder Christian Castro (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) dribbled down the right side and sent the ball to senior forward Steve Petrosino (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) in the penalty area. Petrosino knocked the ball into the goal for a 1-0 lead. Then in the 11th minute, a cross from freshman defender Simon Ekman (Pitea, Sweden/Lulea) found Petrosino, who one-timed the ball into the net for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season.

Petrosino, who moved to forward this season after three years as an all-CACC central defender, continued to cause problems for the Griffin defense, drawing a foul in the penalty area in the 29th minute. Castro converted the ensuing penalty kick for a 3-0 lead. Chestnut Hill got on the scoreboard in the 40th minute on a goal by Michael Hester. But the Cougars held the Griffins at bay the rest of the game, and Castro added a fourth goal on a breakaway off a long pass from Ekman in the 70th minute. Castro also has four goals on the season.

Junior goalkeeper Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) recorded seven saves in goal for Caldwell, while James Jackson also made seven saves for Chestnut Hill.

The Cougars play at Bloomfield College in another key CACC match on Wednesday, Oct. 8. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. at Foley Field in Bloomfield, N.J.
