LAKEWOOD, N.J. – After giving up an early goal, the Caldwell University men's soccer team came back to defeat Georgian Court University, 3-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at the GCU Soccer Field. The Cougars (10-5 overall, 7-4 CACC) wrapped up a spot in the CACC Tournament with the win. The Lions drop to 3-10-2, 3-6-1 CACC.
Georgian Court took a 1-0 lead with a goal by Edward Glover on a penalty kick in the 19th minute. A pair of freshman defenders helped Caldwell pull even in the 42nd minute, as
Patrick Grey (Auckland, New Zealand/Auckland) headed home a pass from
Tomas Carvalho (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic). The Cougars took control of the game with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, junior midfielder
Christian Castro (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) scored on a header off a pass from senior forward
Steve Petrosino (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South). Fifty-three seconds later, Petrosino one-timed a pass from Castro into the goal to give Caldwell a 3-1 advantage. Castro now has a team-leading nine goals on the season, while Petrosino has eight goals.
Junior goalkeeper
Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) kept the Lions off the scoreboard other than the penalty kick with seven saves. Rylan Gentil recorded six saves for Georgian Court. This is the seventh time in the 24-year history of the program and the first time since 2008 that the Cougars have won 10 or more games in a season.
Caldwell hosts Felician College on Tuesday, Oct. 28 in the final CACC game of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
