Caldwell Men’s Soccer Tops Nyack, 4-1

BLAUVELT, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Christian Castro (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) scored two goals to lead the Caldwell University men's soccer team past Nyack College, 4-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday afternoon at the OMM Soccer Complex. The win is the fourth in five games for the Cougars, who are now 9-5 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Warriors drop to 0-12-2, 0-8-1 CACC.

Just 73 second into the game, Nyack struck first with a goal by Maximillian Schmitt to take a 1-0 lead. Caldwell pulled even with Castro's first goal of the game in the 10th minute. Then in the 37th minute, senior forward Steve Petrosino (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) tallied his seventh goal of the season to put the Cougars on top, 2-1. Castro made it 3-1 with his team-leading eighth goal of the year in the 61st minute, then sophomore midfielder Noah Pederson (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) found the net off an assist from senior midfielder Yousef Elhusseini (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) in the 88th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) tallied four saves in goal for Caldwell. Michael Reger and Phillip Mol shared goalkeeping duties for Nyack and combined to make three saves.

The victory gives the Cougars nine wins for the first time since the 2008 squad finished 11-7-1. Caldwell currently sits in fifth place in the CACC standings, three points ahead of Wilmington, Goldey-Beacom and Bloomfield. The top eight teams qualify for the CACC Tournament, which begins on Nov. 4.

The Cougars face Georgian Court University in another CACC match on the road on Saturday, Oct. 25, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
