CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell University volleyball team won an exciting non-conference match against Molloy College in five sets Thursday night in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars, who won by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 17-25, 24-26, 15-13, improve to 9-6 with the victory. The Lions fall to 6-8 on the season.
Caldwell held Molloy to a .044 hitting percentage over the first two sets in winning both sets by the identical score of 25-20. Freshman outside hitter
Taryn Auyong (Honolulu, HI/Kamehameha) delivered six kills over the first two sets, while senior right side
Erica Harrell (Richardson, TX/Plano East) had five kills. The Lions turned things around in the third and fourth sets, hitting a combined .323 to tie up the match. In the fourth set, Caldwell led 24-21 and had three match points, only to have Molloy score five consecutive points to force a fifth set.
In the deciding fifth set, the Cougars led 11-9 before the Lions tallied the next three points to lead 12-11. The score was 13-12 Molloy when senior setter
Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica) delivered a kill, then served back-to-back aces to clinch the match. Nestoras finished with five kills, 15 assists, 14 digs and four service aces.
Auyong paced the Cougar offense with 15 kills and a .341 hitting percentage. She also added 13 digs. Harrell recorded nine kills, while sophomore outside hitter
Rachael DiLeonardo (Cincinnati, OH/Mt. Notre Dame) and freshman middle blocker
Narae Wadsworth (Reno, NV/Wooster) each had eight kills. Freshman setter
Gabrielle Bennett (San Antonio, TX/Johnson) registered 27 assists and 11 digs. Defensively, senior libero
Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) had 21 digs, DiLeonardo tallied 15 digs and Wadsworth added three total blocks. Danielle Williams and Cassie Palmer paced Molloy with 18 and 17 kills, respectively.
Caldwell plays a key Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Wilmington University. The first serve is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in New Castle, Del.
