CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell University women's soccer team fell to Holy Family University, 1-0 in double overtime in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars are now 6-5-2 overall and 5-2-1 in conference play, while the Tigers improve to 9-4, 8-2 CACC.
The game was a rematch of last year's CACC Tournament final, which Caldwell won 3-0. This year's meeting was extremely competitive, with neither team able to gain the upper hand through 103 minutes. Senior forward
Natalie Migoya (Lincoln Park, NJ/Morris Catholic) had Caldwell's best scoring chances, hitting the post after beating her defender in the 17th minute, and clanging a shot off the crossbar just as time expired in the first overtime period. Senior goalkeeper
Robin Franchi (Sewell, NJ/Deptford) made several key saves, stopping a point-blank shot by Mary Kate Morris in the 62nd minute.
Early in the second overtime period, the Tigers' Ursula Coyle pounced on a loose ball in front of the Caldwell goal and scored the game-winner in the 104th minute. The goal ended the Cougars' three-game winning streak overall and a six-game unbeaten string in conference play.
Franchi finished the game with eight saves in goal for Caldwell, while Holy Family's Sienna Smith tallied three saves for the shutout. Franchi and Migoya were among seven seniors honored before the game. The other seniors are
Emily Boehler (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Regional),
Lauren Iuliucci (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea),
Camille Little (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham),
Ashlee Paknis (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Reg.) and
Melissa Stec (Salt Point, NY/Lourdes).
Caldwell plays a CACC game on the road at Nyack College on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Nyack, N.Y.
