Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Petrosino Lifts Cougars Past Holy Family in Men’s Soccer, 3-2

CALDWELL, N.J. – Senior forward Steve Petrosino (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) scored with just 49 seconds remaining in regulation to break a tie and give the Caldwell University men's soccer team a 3-2 triumph over Holy Family University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars move to 8-5 overall and 5-4 in league play, while the Tigers drop to 5-6-4, 2-5-3 CACC.

With the game tied at 2-2 and time winding down in the second half, senior midfielder Cole Downs (Bricktown, NJ/Brick Twp.) dribbled through the middle of the field and sent a pass to Petrosino to the right. Petrosino dribbled past his defender and blasted a shot into the left side of the goal for his sixth goal of the season. He now has five game-winners this season.

Caldwell jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior defender Kyle Felton (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) rocketed a shot from 35 yards out that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced into the goal off the out-stretched hands of goalkeeper Richard Ongaro 63 seconds into the game. Then in the 26th minute, a penalty kick was awarded to Caldwell after senior forward Evan Teitelbaum (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) was fouled in the box. Junior midfielder Christian Castro (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) converted for his sixth goal of the year and a 2-0 lead.

With the game seemingly in hand for Caldwell, the Tigers pressed to get back into the game in the second half. A foul in the Cougars' penalty area in the 62nd minute resulted in a penalty kick by Tom Kostick that cut the lead in half, 2-1. Then in the 81st minute, James Annobil hit the post with a shot, only to have Aiah Mbriwa knock in the rebound to tie the score at 2-2. But Holy Family was unable to maintain that momentum, as Petrosino ended the Tigers' hopes with his late heroics.

Junior goalkeeper Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) recorded five saves in goal for Caldwell, while Ongaro finished with four saves.

Prior to the game, the team honored its seniors Petrosino, Felton, Teitelbaum, Downs, Yousef Elhusseini (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) and Tim Centineo (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel).

The Cougars face Nyack College in another CACC match on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Nyack, N.Y.
