Caldwell Men’s Soccer Opens Season with OT Defeat

Box Score
ALBANY, N.Y. – A penalty kick in the fifth minute of overtime allowed the College of St. Rose to defeat the Caldwell College men's soccer team, 2-1 in the season opener for both teams Thursday night at Sullivan Field. The Cougars were 6-10-2 in 2012, while the Golden Knights were 1-15 a year ago.

After the teams played to a 1-1 tie through 90 minutes, St. Rose's Nick Iuorno drew a foul in the penalty area in the 95th minute. Juan Garzon converted the ensuing penalty kick to lift the hosts to the victory.

Caldwell got on the scoreboard first, as sophomore defender Andrews Barros (Sao Paolo, Brazil/St. Theresinha) knocked in a corner kick from sophomore Christian Castro (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) less than four minutes after halftime. Dylan Klippenstein pulled the Golden Knights even in the 64th minute, one-timing a cross from Jacob Sand to tie the score at 1-1.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) matched his career high with six saves for Caldwell. Christian Esposito recorded two saves, as St. Rose held a 24-6 advantage in shots.

Next up for Caldwell is another non-league game at West Chester University on Monday, Sept. 9. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in West Chester, Pa.
