BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman forward
Haakon Sulheim (Lillehammer, Norway/Lillehammer) scored his third goal of the game in the 99th minute, as the Caldwell College men's soccer team defeated Concordia College, 4-3 in overtime Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with the dramatic win, while the Clippers fall to 1-5, 1-4 CACC.
With the score tied at 3-3 through 90 minutes, the game went into overtime. Eight minutes into the first overtime period, a corner kick by junior forward
Evan Teitelbaum (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) was headed home by Sulheim, giving him the hat trick and the Cougars an important CACC win on the road. Caldwell has played three overtime games this season, with wins over Concordia and West Chester and a loss to St. Rose.
The game didn't start well for Caldwell, as the Clippers' Ovan Oakley and Jonathan Short scored goals in the first 14 minutes of the first half to take a 2-0 lead. Sulheim tallied his first goal of the game off an assist from junior defender
Steve Petrosino (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) in the 38th minute to make it a 2-1 game. Then in the 60th minute, Sulheim headed in a cross from sophomore midfielder
Christian Castro (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) to tie the score at 2-2.
The Cougars thought they had a come-from-behind win locked up when freshman midfielder
Nicolas Prieto (Newark, NJ/Allentown) scored an unassisted goal, his first as a collegian, in the 76th minute for a 3-2 advantage. But Concordia staged a comeback of its own, getting a goal from Rasheem Eccleston in the 84th minute to tie the score and eventually force overtime.
Sulheim's goal in overtime was his team-leading eighth goal of the season, and his third game-winning goal. The performance also marked his third multi-goal game this year.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) recorded four saves in the victory, while Ruel Gordon had six saves for the Clippers.
Caldwell plays 13th-ranked Wilmington University on Saturday, Sept. 28. The CACC contest begins at 3:30 p.m. in New Castle, Del.
