Spartans Hold Off Caldwell in Men's Soccer, 2-1

SUFFERN, N.Y. – The Caldwell College men's soccer team dropped a non-conference game at St. Thomas Aquinas College, 2-1 Tuesday evening. The loss ends the Cougars' four-game winning streak and gives them an overall record of 4-5-1. The Spartans improve to 3-5-3.

St. Thomas Aquinas took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute on a goal by James Earl. The hosts made it 2-0 in the 29th minute, when Michael Corbi found the net. Laurie Child assisted on both of the Spartans' goals. Caldwell finally broke through with a goal in the 71st minute. Freshman Santiago Benites (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Torremar) received a pass from senior forward Facundo Zalazar (Buenos Aires City, Argentina/San Agustin) and placed a shot inside the post for his first collegiate goal. But Caldwell was unable to net the equalizer, falling for the first time since Sept. 18.

Senior goalkeeper Brian Agostini (N. Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) made eight saves in goal for Caldwell. Andrew Tartara registered five saves for the Spartans.

The Cougars face Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up on Thursday, Oct. 11. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
