CALDWELL, N.J. - Sophomore forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, NY/Newfield) scored in the 103rd minute to give the Caldwell College men's soccer team a 1-0 triumph over Philadelphia University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. With the win, the Cougars improve to 6-4-1 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Rams fall to 4-7, 2-5 CACC.
With the game still scoreless three minutes into the second overtime period, junior forward Facundo Zalazar (Buenos Aires City, Argentina/San Agustin) got on the end of a long punt from freshman Alex Cunha (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), dribbled into the penalty area and blasted a shot from the right side. The ball caromed off the post to Whyte, who deflected the ball into the goal for the game-winner. The goal was Whyte's team-leading 10th of the season.
The Cougars were forced to play all but 35 minutes of the game with 10 players, as junior goalkeeper Brian Agostini (N. Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) was given a red card in the 36th minute. Agostini, who had made three saves in the game, challenged a loose ball near the top of the penalty area and collided with the Rams' Victor Chagonda. Cunha replaced Agostini and played the final 68 minutes, recording three saves for his first collegiate victory. Alex Heston tallied eight saves in goal for Philadelphia, as the Cougars out-shot the Rams 19-17 for the game.
The Cougars host Nyack College in a CACC contest on Wednesday, Oct. 12. The game begins at 4:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
