CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team completed the regular season with a 5-2 triumph over Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Friday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Cougars (7-8-2 overall), who clinch eighth place and the final playoff spot in the CACC at 4-6-1 in league play. The Lightning drop to 0-15 overall and 0-11 CACC.
Junior midfielder Donald Kafer (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) put Caldwell on the scoreboard in the 16th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Kristopher Bistre (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's Prep). Junior forward Facundo Zalazar (Buenos Aires City, Argentina/San Agustin) made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, when he finished a pass from freshman midfielder Yousef Elhusseini (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge). The score remained 2-0 into the second half, until junior goalkeeper Brian Agostini (N. Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) was called for a foul in the penalty area in the 54th minute. On the ensuing penalty kick, Thatcher Howell beat Agostini to his right to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the 76th minute, Elhusseini, pictured, tallied his first collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, NY/Newfield) to restore Caldwell's two-goal lead. But less than five minutes later, Andre Jank pounced on a loose ball and scored for the Lightning to make the score 3-2 Caldwell. With time running down, Zalazar put the game away in the 88th minute with his second goal of the game, heading home a corner kick from freshman midfielder Tim Centineo (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel). Whyte tallied his team-leading 12th goal of the season just before time expired to make the final score 5-2.
Agostini finished with five saves in goal for Caldwell. Iganacio Farias tallied four saves in 80 minutes, while Carlos Meinhard notched five saves in the final 10 minutes for Goldey-Beacom.
Caldwell makes its first appearance in the CACC Tournament since 2008 on Monday, Oct. 31, when the Cougars will play top-seeded Post University in Waterbury, Conn. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
