CALDWELL COMES BACK TO TIE NYACK IN MEN'S SOCCER

CALDWELL, N.J. - Trailing 3-1 late into the second half, the Caldwell College men's soccer team scored two goals in the final eight minutes of regulation to tie Nyack College, 3-3 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The result leaves the Cougars with a 3-2-1 record in the conference (6-4-2 overall), while the Warriors (6-4-2) are now 3-3-2 in the CACC.

With the game seemingly out of reach late in the second half, freshman midfielder Cole Downs (Bricktown, NJ/Brick), pictured, hit sophomore forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, NY/Newfield) with a pass down the right side. Whyte dribbled behind the defense and scored his 11th goal of the season in the 83rd minute to make the score 3-2. Five minutes later, Whyte took a free kick from about 40 yards out that was headed into the goal by freshman defender Steve Petrosino (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) to tie the score at 3-3.

Nyack jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Felix Horn in the eighth minute and Marco Likos in the 18th minute. Freshman defender Arben Cosovic (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) collected a loose ball and blasted a shot into the goal from 20 yards out in the 31st minute to make the score 2-1. But the Warriors restored their two-goal lead in the 33rd minute on a goal by Gavin Penny.

Both teams had golden scoring chances in the first overtime period, with Caldwell hitting the crossbar and Nyack bouncing a shot off the post. But the score held, giving the Cougars their second tie of the season. The game marked the fifth double-overtime game of the year for Caldwell, which has a 2-1-2 record in those games.

Freshman Alex Cunha (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) made his first collegiate start and recorded seven saves for Caldwell. Nyack's Adrian Ibanez  had nine saves.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 with a CACC game at Dominican College. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
