BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Freshman midfielder Kristopher Bistre (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) scored in the 108th minute to give the Caldwell College men's soccer team a 2-1 double-overtime win over Bloomsburg University in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Sports Stadium. Bistre's first collegiate goal gives the Cougars (1-2) their first victory of the season, while the Huskies fall to 0-2.
Bryce Shaffer put Bloomsburg ahead with a goal in the 26th minute for a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until the 78th minute, when senior midfielder Rob Arena (Sparta, NJ/Sparta), pictured, headed in a free kick from senior midfielder Bryan Broderick (West Keansburg, NJ/Raritan) to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore Chris Skarbelis (N. Andover, MA/Leonardtown) also assisted on Arena's goal.
The game remained tied through the end of regulation and the first 10-minute overtime period. With just 2:31 left in the second overtime period, Bistre dribbled through the Huskies defense and scored an unassisted goal to break the tie and end an eight-game winless streak that stretched back to last season.
Junior goalkeeper John Londono (West New York, NJ/Memorial) kept the Cougars in the game with eight saves. Bernie Roell made four saves in goal for the Huskies.
Caldwell hosts Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, Sept. 11, in the Cougars' first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match of the season. The kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
