CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to visiting Concordia College, 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The result gives the Cougars a 2-5 record overall, including a 1-3 mark in conference play, while the Clippers are now 2-4-1, 2-2 CACC.
Concordia struck first in the 36th minute, when Alessandro Persampieri deflected a throw-in by Michael Barbetto to Ekene Okereke, who scored for a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes after halftime, David Mero took a Persampieri pass, dribbled in and hit a shot into the right side of the goal to put the Clippers ahead 2-0. Caldwell got back into the game with a goal by sophomore Chris Skarbelis (North Andover, MA/Leonardtown), who headed home a long cross from junior defender Dimitri Grant (Christ Chursch, Barbados/Queen's) in the 60th minute. The Cougars came close to tying the game in the 82nd minute, but a header by senior defender Rob Arena (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) off a corner kick was saved off the line by a Concordia defender. Two minutes later, Douglas Cambridge scored on a counter attack to restore the Clippers' two-goal lead.
Junior goalkeeper John Londono (West New York, NJ/Memorial) made four saves in goal for Caldwell, while William Camerlingo stopped five shots for the Clippers. The teams each took 12 shots, while the Cougars held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Caldwell returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 25, when the Cougars play at Goldey-Beacom College in another CACC contest. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Wilmington, Del.
