CALDWELL, N.J. - A goal in the sixth minute of the first overtime period allowed Dominican College to defeat the Caldwell College men's soccer team, 2-1 in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The loss ends the season for the Cougars (6-11-1), who finish in ninth place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings with a 4-6-1 mark, one spot out of the CACC Tournament. The Chargers clinch third place and improve to 12-3-2, 7-2-2 CACC.
After a scoreless first half, Dominican took the lead in the 48th minute, when Sony Narro back-heeled a loose ball off a corner kick into the right side of the goal. The game remained tied until the 66th minute. Freshman midfielder Kristopher Bistre (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) sent a through ball from the middle to freshman forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, NY/Newfield) on the right side. Whyte dribbled into the penalty area and placed a shot into the left side of the goal to tie the score at 1-1. It was Whyte's team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Neither team was able to score during the final 25 minutes of regulation, sending the game into overtime. Just under six minutes into the first overtime period, Matthew Shutter got on the end of a corner kick from Alan Heavey and headed the ball into the goal for a 2-1 Dominican victory. The Chargers took six shots in overtime and held a 23-13 advantage in shots for the game. For Caldwell, either a tie or a win would have been enough to put the Cougars into next week's CACC Tournament.
Junior goalkeeper John Londono (West New York, NJ/Memorial) made 10 saves in goal for Caldwell, while Brandon Heembrock registered two saves for Dominican.
The loss also marked the final collegiate game for Caldwell's five seniors: midfielder Rob Arena (Sparta, NJ/Sparta), defenders Bryan Broderick (West Keansburg, NJ/Raritan), Olof Engh (Karlstad, Sweden) and Andy Loughnane (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford), and goalkeeper Steven DeAngelis (Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook).
