CALDWELL, N.J. - Three goals in the first 19 minutes of the game allowed the Caldwell College men's soccer team to beat Wilmington University, 3-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The victory keeps the Cougars' hopes alive for a spot in the CACC Tournament, improving their record to 6-9-1 overall and 4-5-1 in league play. The Wildcats (6-10-1) complete their CACC schedule with a 5-5-1 record.
Less than two minutes after the opening kick-off, sophomore midfielder Chris Skarbelis (North Andover, MA/Leonardtown) one-timed a pass to freshman forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, NY/Newfield), who blasted a shot into the right side of the goal for an early 1-0 lead. Just 1:31 later, a crossing pass into the Wilmington penalty area went off the head of a Wildcats' defender, over the head of goalkeeper Russell Dobos and into the goal for an own goal and a stunning 2-0 Caldwell advantage. Things continued to bounce Caldwell's way, as a cross from senior midfielder Rob Arena (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) in the 19th minute went through Dobos' hands, allowing sophomore midfielder Donald Kafer (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown), right, to run onto the ball and knock it into the goal for a 3-0 lead. Wilmington never recovered, and the Cougars ended a four-game winless streak to move into a tie with Post University for eighth place. The top eight teams in the CACC standings qualify for the CACC Tournament.
Junior goalkeeper John Londono (West New York, NJ/Memorial) recorded two saves for his fourth shutout of the season. Dobos played the first half for Wilmington and made two saves, and Duhan Malali made three saves in the second half.
Caldwell plays a non-conference game at Molloy College on Wednesday, Oct. 27. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
