FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team lost a non-conference game to Queens College, 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Queens Campus Field. The defeat keeps the Cougars winless on the season at 0-2, while the Knights improve to 2-2.
Queens struck first in the sixth minute, when Adam Maliniak headed home a cross from Elhadji Mbou for a 1-0 lead. In the 37th minute, the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick following a Queens foul in the penalty area. Junior defender Olof Engh (Karlstad, Sweden) took the kick, but goalkeeper Julio Rodriguez made the save. Junior forward Rob Arena (Sparta, NJ/Sparta), left, pounced on the loose ball and scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. The game remained tied into the second half until Maliniak gave the Knights the lead for good with an unassisted goal in the 61st minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper John Londono (West New York, NJ/Memorial) recorded nine saves in goal for Caldwell, while Rodriquez finished with one save for Queens.
The Cougars play their first home game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 12, when they host defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champion Post University. The kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
