BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Caldwell College volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches at the University of Bridgeport Tournament, falling to UMass-Lowell 3-1 and Merrimack College 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Hubbell Gym. The results give the Cougars a 1-3 record on the season.
Against UMass-Lowell, the Cougars dropped the first set, 25-20 before answering with a 25-23 win in the second set to tie the match. The River Hawks registered 18 kills and posted a .433 hitting percentage to take the third set, 25-19, then closed out the match with a 25-18 victory. Junior outside hitter Cory Roesing (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus), pictured, had a team-high 11 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Titlola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) recorded 10 kills. Sarah Coscia led all players with 22 kills and a .514 hitting percentage.
In the day's second match, Merrimack cruised to a three-set sweep, winning 25-12, 25-17, 25-15. Alao led the Caldwell offense with nine kills, while freshman outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) paced the defense with 12 digs. Merrimack's Molly Cindric had 11 kills in the win.
The Cougars return to action at the East Stroudsburg Tournament on Friday, Sept. 11.
