CALDWELL, N.J. - Sophomore midfielder Carlos Sanchez (Nutley, NJ/Nutley), left, scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute to give the Caldwell College men's soccer team a 2-1 overtime victory over Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The win evens the Cougars' conference record at 3-3 (3-7 overall), while the Eagles drop to 2-7-2, 2-3-1 CACC.
About seven minutes into the first overtime period, freshman forward Facundo Zalazar (Buenos Aires City, Argentina/San Agustin) received a throw-in from freshman forward William Yeates (Southampton, England/Thornden), beat his defender and sent a pass across the front of the goal. Sanchez ran onto the ball at the far post and hit a shot with his first touch into the goal for the game-winner. Both of Sanchez's career goals at Caldwell have come in overtime, as his first goal defeated Holy Family University in double-overtime back on Sept. 13, 2008.
Caldwell opened the scoring in the 24th minute, when sophomore midfielder Kieran Bisland (Paisley, Scotland/St. Andrew's Acad.) dribbled down the left flank and crossed the ball into the middle. After Post goalkeeper Nicholas Gutbrod knocked the ball away, a defender accidently deflected the ball into the goal for a 1-0 Caldwell lead. The Eagles knotted the score in the second half on a well-placed shot by Johan Pineda from 25 yards out in the 67th minute. Post had multiple chances to take the lead in regulation, but the score remained tied, forcing overtime and setting up Sanchez's heroics.
The Eagles were dangerous offensively for most of the game, taking 25 shots compared to five for Caldwell. But sophomore goalkeeper John Londono (West New York, NJ/Memorial) made eight saves, including several difficult stops, to keep the Cougars in the game. Gutbrod played 81 minutes and made two saves, while Errol Reid recorded one save in the final 16 minutes.
Next up for Caldwell is another CACC game against Philadelphia University on Saturday, Oct. 10. The game is set to start at 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field following the women's game.
