ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - A goal with 14 seconds left in the second half allowed Molloy College to defeat the Caldwell College men's soccer team, 2-1 in a non-conference match Wednesday evening at the Dean Skelos Sports Complex. The heartbreaking defeat leaves the Cougars at 2-3 on the season, while the Lions snap a three-game losing skid to improve to 1-3.
With the game tied at 1-1 and the clock winding down, Molloy's Graeme Roderick took a pass from Paul Hughes and tucked the ball just inside the left post from eight yards out for the game-winner. It was Roderick's first goal of the season.
After a scoreless first half, Molloy struck first when Nick D'Alessandro scored in the 54th minute. The Cougars answered less than seven minutes later, as freshman Jonathan Costa (Mississauga, Ontario/Philip Pocock) put away a rebound off a shot by junior Justin Miller (Monroe, NJ/Monroe), pictured, to tie the game at 1-1. Molloy's chances appeared to suffer a blow when a player was issued a red card in the 84th minute, forcing the Lions to finish the game with 10 players. But the disadvantage did not hamper Roderick, who beat the clock and put an end to a game that appeared to be headed to overtime.
Senior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) made five saves in goal for Caldwell. Molloy's Ettore Morelli recorded four saves for the win.
The Cougars begin their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule with a game at Holy Family University on Saturday, Sept. 13. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
