CALDWELL, N.J. - After losing its first nine duals, the Caldwell College women's tennis team edged Molloy College, 5-4 to earn its first victory of the season Monday afternoon at the Caldwell College Tennis Courts. The win gives the Cougars a 1-9 record on the season, while the Lady Lions fall to 1-9.
The Cougars' top doubles team of junior Chiaki Saito (Tokyo, Japan) and freshman Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield), pictured, picked up Caldwell's only point in doubles play with an 8-4 win over Alexandra Bonventre and Angeline Asaro. Saito and Ndhlovu followed up their doubles win with straight-set victories at first and second singles, respectively. Sophomore Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) gave Caldwell points at the top three singles spots with her win over Meghan McDevitt at No. 3 singles. Senior Mackenzie Lynch (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) captured a straight-set triumph at No. 5 singles for the Cougars' fifth point.
Monday's victory avenges a 5-4 loss to Molloy suffered in the season opener back on Sept. 8 in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
Caldwell looks for its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win on Wednesday, Oct. 8, when the Cougars play at Post University. The dual begins at 3:00 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
