MEN'S SOCCER CLINCHES SHARE OF TITLE WITH 4-2 TRIUMPH OVER NYACK

CALDWELL, N.J. - Two goals by senior forward Luis Sartorio (Asuncion, Paraguay) lifted the Caldwell College men's soccer team past Nyack College, 4-2, in the final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game for both teams Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The victory wraps up the top seed in next week's CACC Tournament and clinches at least a share of the conference regular-season title for the Cougars, who are now 11-6-1 overall and 8-1-1 in conference play. The Warriors end their season at 6-13-1, 3-7 CACC.

Nyack took an early 1-0 lead when Gavin Penny blasted a shot from 30 yards out in the 11th minute. In the 18th minute, senior forward Chad Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion) received a long throw from junior defender Justin Everett (Stewartstown, PA/Kennard-Dale) down the left flank and hit a rocket into the right side of the goal to tie the game 1-1. Bennett now has a team-leading 13 goals on the season. Bennett set up the go-ahead goal when Sartorio knocked home Bennett's centering pass in the 24th minute. Less than two minutes later, Sartorio sent a crossing pass to freshman midfielder Kieran Bisland (Paisley, Scotland/St. Andrew's), whose shot found the goal for a 3-1 Cougar lead.

But the Warriors did not stop battling. Still in the first half, Penny was taken down in the penalty area by a Caldwell defender, and a penalty kick was awarded. Daniel Ocampo put the ball into the lower left corner to cut the deficit to 3-2. But Nyack wouldn't get any closer, as Sartorio tapped in a pass from Bisland after a long crossing pass from junior Justin Miller (Monroe, NJ/Monroe) in the 74th minute. The victory extends the Cougars' unbeaten streak to four games.

Senior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) tallied four saves in the win, while Issac Wade made six saves for Nyack. Plaugic, Bennett, Sartorio, midfielder James Broderick (West Keansburg, NJ/Raritan) and defenders Kyle Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), Kagiso Rhenoster (Mafikeng, South Africa/Mmbatho) and Kevoi Walters (Clarendon, Jamaica/Clarendon) played in their final game at Caldwell Field for the Cougars.

Bloomfield College can tie the Cougars for first place with a victory over Philadelphia University on Oct. 31. But Caldwell holds the tie-breaker over Bloomfield by virtue of the Cougars' victory over the Deacons on Oct. 16, meaning Caldwell will be the No. 1 seed in next week's CACC Tournament. The Cougars will play in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 12:00 p.m. at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, Pa., against the winner of the game between the fourth and fifth seeded teams.
