BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Caldwell College men's soccer team scored three goals in the second half, including two by senior forward Chad Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion), to beat Bloomfield College, 3-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday afternoon at Watessing Park. The Cougars end a two-game losing streak and improve to 8-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference, while Bloomfield (9-5 overall) suffers its first CACC loss and drops to 7-1 in league play.
The Deacons, who entered the game atop the CACC standings, opened the scoring in the 11th minute, when Jason Bryan received a drop pass from Dwayne Reid at the top of the penalty area and blasted a shot past senior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) for a 1-0 lead. Bloomfield held the one-goal advantage until the 66th minute. Bennett, pictured, received a pass from freshman midfielder Kieran Bisland (Paisley, Scotland/St. Andrew's Acad.) and dribbled into the penalty area, where he was taken down. Bennett made the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1.
Just over five minutes later, senior defender Kagiso Rhenoster (Mafikeng, South Africa/Mmbatho) crossed the ball in to Bennett, who fired a shot into the left side of the goal for a 2-1 Caldwell lead. The goal was Bennett's team-leading 10th of the season. Then in the 80th minute, freshman forward Jonathan Costa (Mississauga, Ontario/Philip Pocock) one-timed a cross from sophomore midfielder Rob Arena (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) into the back of the net to put the Cougars ahead 3-1. Bloomfield mounted a furious comeback and made it a one-goal game late in the contest when Johan Orange put home a rebound off a free kick from Triston Sommerville. But the Deacons ran out of time as the Cougars held on for the important victory.
Plaugic finished with four saves on the day for Caldwell, while Julian Gaviria recorded two saves for Bloomfield.
The Cougars return home to face Philadelphia University on Saturday, Oct. 18, in the first CACC match between the two programs. The kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. following the women's game at Caldwell Field.
