CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team shut out Goldey-Beacom College, 3-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The victory keeps the Cougars unbeaten in the conference at 4-0 and improves their overall record to 6-2-2 on the season. The Lightning falls to 0-9-2, 0-2-2 CACC.
The Cougars scored their first goal three minutes before halftime, when freshman forward Rob Arena (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) collected a loose ball and blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the left side of the goal. It was Arena's first collegiate goal. In the 65th minute, junior forward Chad Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion), pictured, received a pass from senior defender Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru) and beat Lightning goalkeeper Rob Garafalo for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Then in the 73rd minute, after the Lightning were called for a handball in the penalty area, junior forward Luis Sartorio (Asuncion, Paraguay/St. Benedict's Prep) converted the ensuing penalty kick for a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars dominated play and held a 23-3 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) made one save for his fourth shutout of the season, while Garofalo recorded eight saves for Goldey-Beacom.
Next up for the Cougars is a meeting with Dominican College, the defending CACC champions. The game has been moved to 1:30 p.m. and will be played at Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg, N.Y.
