RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A goal by Billy Curran less than two minutes into the first overtime period allowed Wilmington University to defeat the Caldwell College men's soccer team, 1-0 in the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Tryon Field. The Cougars end their season with a record of 10-6-4, while the Wildcats (12-5-1) advance to Saturday's final against Holy Family University.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the Cougars were called for a handball deep in their own territory early in the first overtime session. Wilmington's Fatoma Turay sent his free kick from the right side to the far post, where Curran ran onto the ball and headed it home for the game-winner in the 92nd minute. Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) made three saves, while Wilmington's Dan Mangat recorded four saves for the shutout.
The loss ends the careers of seniors Matt Broderick (West Keansburg, NJ/Raritan), Andrew Fraser (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's), Nicholas Harriott (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Campion) and Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru). The four seniors won 47 games in their careers, the most in a four-year period in the history of the men's soccer program at Caldwell.
