MEN'S SOCCER SUFFERS FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS OF SEASON

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team lost a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match to Dominican College, 5-0 Wednesday afternoon at Tappan Zee High School. The defeat is the first CACC loss of the season for the Cougars (6-3-2), who are now 4-1 in conference play. The Chargers, who have won the past three CACC titles, improve to 7-1-5 overall, 5-0-1 CACC.

Dominican scored what proved to be the game-winner with just 29 seconds left in the first half. Jhonny Arteaga pounced on a loose ball off a defensive error and beat junior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) for a 1-0 lead. Dominican's Joe Wright had two goals in the second half with Arteaga adding another to make it 4-0. Diego Miranda closed out the scoring in the 88th minute.

The Cougars held a 21-12 advantage in shots but were unable to put one past Robert Kelly, who made two saves for the shutout. Junior forward Chad Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion), pictured, hit the post in the first half and blasted a shot just over the crossbar in the second half for the Cougars' best scoring chances. Plaugic made three saves in goal for Caldwell.

The Cougars play another important CACC contest on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they play at Wilmington College. The women's teams play at 5:00 p.m., with the men's game to follow at 7:00 p.m. at Caravel Academy.
