ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - Dominican College handed the Caldwell College men's soccer team its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss Sunday afternoon. The 3-1 defeat dropped the Cougars to 7-4-1 overall and 5-1 in the CACC, while the Chargers, ranked 18th in the latest NSCAA Division II poll, improved to 12-1 and 6-0 in the conference.
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior forward Uke Dauti (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) in the 18th minute. Dauti received a pass from junior midfielder Jorge Ibarcena (Lima, Peru), beat his defender and put the ball into the right side of the goal for his team-leading seventh of the season. Dominican had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the 33rd minute, when the Chargers were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the penalty area. But senior goalkeeper Mike Turdo (West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley), pictured, dove to his right to save Joe Ruesgan's attempt and keep the Chargers off the scoreboard. But Dominican pulled even just four minutes later, when Jhonny Arteaga headed in a corner kick from Ryan Clancy.
The game remained tied until Clancy received a long pass and scored in the 66th minute. Arteaga then scored an insurance goal in the 78th minute after Turdo saved a blast off of a free kick from Ruesgan, only to have Arteaga put the rebound into the goal.
Turdo finished the game with six saves, while Chargers goalkeeper Robert Kelly made one save.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, Oct. 20, when they host Bloomfield College in a CACC game. Kick-off is set for 3:30 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
