BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team scored three straight goals to overcome an early deficit and defeat Bloomsburg University, 3-2 in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Cougars improve to 8-5-2 on the season, while the Huskies drop to 5-11.
Bloomsburg's Greg Pompei gave the Huskies an early 1-0 lead with his goal in the 10th minute. Freshman Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru) scored his fourth goal of the season to tie the score in the 15th minute. The Cougars took the lead for good in the 35th minute, when junior Kevin Libbos (Ontario, Canada/Glengarry) tallied his second goal of the season.
Eight minutes into the second have, sophomore Bard Skjelstad (Bodo, Norway) scored a much-needed insurance goal, his team-leading sixth of the year, for a 3-1 Caldwell lead. Pompei struck again for the Huskies in the 61st minute with a converted penalty kick that brought Bloomsburg to within one goal. But Caldwell kept the Huskies off the scoreboard for the final 29 minutes of the game to preserve the victory.
Junior goalkeeper Mike Turdo (West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley) made four saves for the Cougars, while Jason Balthaser recorded five saves for the Huskies.
The Cougars return to action this Sunday, Oct. 24, when they host Stonehill College at 12:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field. The game will mark the final regular-season home match for Caldwell's five seniors.
