It's a homecoming of sorts for Nysir Smith '21, joining the Caldwell University Sprint Football coaching staff as wide receivers coach, a tie back to the first Cougars team in 2017.
Smith played running back for the Cougars on that inaugural squad, and had the distinction of scoring the team's first touchdown, scampering down the sideline for a 43-yard run to paydirt in the program's first contest on Sept. 16, 2017.
A graduate of Bard High School Early College, Smith was a standout prep performer at Malcolm X Shabazz High School in nearby Newark. He later coached at Newark East Side from 2020 through 2023, helping the Red Raiders to their first seven-win season in program history (7-2) and first division championship last year. He served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the squad, and coached running backs in the prestigious Robeson All-Star Game Classic in 2022.
Smith resides in Elizabeth, N.J.
