Mark Ibarra (Elizabeth, N.J.) gave his team the lead for good as Caldwell University men's soccer topped Saint Michael's College, 4-1, in the first leg of the Bentley University Tournament at Bentley Soccer Field in the season opener for both squads on Thursday.
After the Purple Knights (0-1) scored on a penalty kick in the seventh minute, Krause beat the SMC keeper on an assist by freshman midfielder
Hakon Lovstad (Lillestrom, Norway) in the 29th.
The score remained tied into the second half, when Ibarra, assisted by sophomore forward
Roy Torjman (Tel Aviv, Israel) gave CU the lead un the 59th minute.
Eight minutes later, the Cougars (1-0) gained some insurance on a marker by freshman forward
Charlie Tecke (Auckland, New Zealand), assisted by junior forward
Philipp Federer (Gabersdorf, Austria). Junior midfielder
Christopher Castro (Union City, N.J.) capped the scoring with a tally in the 72nd minute, Tecke earning the assist.
Two Cougar netminders split time in goal. Junior
Kura De Oliveira Curado took the first 45 minutes, permitting just the PK marker, while freshman
Diogo Da Silva (Newark, N.J.) took over after the intermission and made two stops.
The Cougars outshot their Northeast 10 Conference counterparts, 18-10, and took four corner kicks to the Purple Knights' two in a fine defensive effort.
In all, 22 Cougars saw action in the solid team win.
Caldwell next takes on tournament host Bentley on Saturday at 2:30.
