Maddie Matkosky (Horseheads, N.Y.) hit her second home run of the season, a first-inning solo shot, but fourth-seeded Caldwell softball couldn't hold the lead in a 7-1 defeat to No. 5 Assumption at Melissa Bisaccia Field on Friday.
Caldwell (29-20) now faces top-seeded Franklin Pierce in an elimination bracket contest on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.. FPU dropped a 6-1 verdict to No. 8 Mercy earlier on Friday.
The Cougars got on the board in the first inning on Matkosky's blast. The Greyhounds answered with a run on a double, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth.
The Cougars had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of teh frame when freshman RF
Kendall Mazur (Milville, N.J.) led off the fourth with a double and went to third when sophomore
Arlette Batista (Carteret, N.J.) sacrificed. But two strikeouts ended the threat, and AU would tally three times in the sixth for the tiebreaking runs.
Sophomore
Haleigh Fisher (Smyrna, N.Y.) went the first five innings, allowing just one hit and one run and walking none.
