GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -- In a matchup of two of the top four teams in the recently-released NCAA Division II East Region Softball poll, it was the No. 4 ranked Adelphi Panthers coming out on top in a double header with top-ranked Caldwell, 5-4 and 8-3, at Janet L. Ficke Field on Wednesday.
In the opener, the Cougars (25-17) scored in the top of the first on a single by freshman RF

After the Panthers (31-17) took a 2-1 lead in the second, Freshman DP

Adelphi used a three-run sixth to take a 5-3 lead. The Cougars had one more rally in them, a two-out, run-scoring double by sophomore SS
Maddie Matkosky (Horseheads, N.Y.) made it 5-4 before the hosts recorded the final out.
In game two, Caldwell batted back from a 4-0 deficit in the fourth, scoring three runs on a two-run double by freshman pinch hitter
Maddie Long (Folcroft, Pa.) followed by a single by sophomore pinch hitter
Amanda Preston (Warwick, R.I.). But AU tacked on three runs in the bottom of the frame and another in the fifth for the final margin.
The Cougars, the CACC regular season champions and No. 1 seed, host the No. Post University Eagles on Saturday at 1:30 in a doubleheader to begin a best-of-three first round series.
