CALDWELL, N.J. — Senior 2B Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) had two hits including his second home run of the year, driving in three runs as Caldwell baseball dropped a 12-8 verdict to Thomas Jefferson in a CACC matchup at Kiwanis Oval on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars took an early 4-0 lead on the strength of RBI hits by senior 1B Chris Hopf (Middlesex, N.J.), senior LF Jimmy Kurtz (Buena, N.J.), senior catcher Chris Bayo (Miami) and freshman DH Ethan Arter (Moorestown, N.J.).
After TJU (17-14, 16-8 CACC) tied the game on the first of two grand slam home runs the Rams would hit on the day, CU regained the lead on an error. The Rams score seven in the sixth for an 11-6 lead.
Young would slice the Cougars' deficit in half with his three-run shot in the home half of the sixth but CU (11-21, 9-15) would post just one base runner after Young's homer to close the game.
Freshman RF Izaiah Robinson (Franklin Twp., N.J.) and freshman 3B Justin Levine (Staten Island, N.Y.) had two hits each for the Cougars.
Sophomore lefty Dean Fiore (Woodbridge, Va.) and sophomore righty Johnny Amato (Roselle Park, N.J.) combined to allow just one run over the last three innings.
The Cougars next visit Felician on Saturday at noon in their next action. The scheduled non-league contest with Queens scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed.
