NEWARK, Del. -- Freshman forward
Terence Thompson (Rochester, N.Y.) tipped in the game-winning basket with two seconds left, lifting Caldwell to a thrilling 70-69 victory over Wilmington in CACC men's basketball action at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Senior forward
DeAngelo Horn, who led all scorers in the game with 18 points, gave the Cougars a chance to win when he blocked a layup attempt with under 10 seconds left. Disdaining the time out, the Cougars went the length of the floor and when a Cougar layup fell off the rim, Thompson crashed and tipped in what proved to be the deciding bucket with 0:02 to play.Â
On the ensuing inbounds pass, Thompson ensured the CU victory with an interception at the WU free throw line as time expired.
The Cougars led for most of the second half, extending a 37-33 halftime lead to as many as nine at 54-45 with 12:42 to play on a layup by senior guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.).
But the Wildcats (8-15. 4-11 CACC) battled back, taking the lead on a jump shot by Denim Perkins with 52 seconds to go. After the Cougars failed to score on their next possession, WU let the shot clock run down before attempting the layup that Horn deflected to Thompson, who flipped the outlet to junior guard
Todd Rochelle (Laurelton, N.Y.), who raced upcourt and whose layup fell just off the rim before Thompson's heroics put CU (10-12, 8-7) in the lead.
In the Cougars' fourth straight win, all in CACC games, Horn added nine rebounds. Junior swingman
Jaiden Williams contributed 14 points an was a menace on defense with four steals and a block. Rochelle added 12 and five assists and Evans posted five assists and four rebounds.
Jaiden Guy and Tre Hawkins had 15 points each for the Wildcats.
The Cougars next host Bridgeport on Wednesday evening at 7:30.
