Women's Basketball Comes Up Just Short in Narrow Defeat to League Unbeaten Holy Family

Coogan Reels off Game-High 24 But 20-0 Tigers Rally, Prove Too Much

CALDWELL, N.J. -- Holy Family has proven to be the top team in the CACC women's basketball standings all season, and though Caldwell gave the Tigers all they could handle, taking a 16-point third quarter lead, the Tigers rallied to compete an unbeaten CACC regular-season, 69-65 at the Newman Center on Saturday.

Caldwell (20-8, 13-7 CACC) got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first eight points before HFU would eventually tie the score at 16 after the first quarter.

In the second, clinging to a one-point lead, CU went on a 9-0 run, started by a three pointer by junior guard Neysa Aguilar (Middlesex, N.J.) and capped by a Coogan layup and two Aguilar free throws for a 34-24 edge with 31 seconds left in the half.

After HFU (25-3, 20-0) close to within three early in the third, back to back threes by Coogan and junior guard Jah'Nel Lewis (Jersey City, N.J.) followed by another Coogan triple boosted the hosts' advantage to 51-35 with 2:54 left.

HFU managed to get its deficit to 11 by the end of the third, then outscored CU by a 27-12 count to take the victory.

Coogan had nine rebounds and two steals, while Lewis contributed 16 point, five rebounds and three assists, Aguilar totaled 15 points and junior guard Brooke Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) notched four steals, seven rebounds and four assists.

Coogan and fellow seniors Marissa Sorvillo (Charlotte, N.C.) and Gules Esposito (Staten Island, N.Y.) were honored for their contributions ot the program in a pre-game ceremony.

Caldwell secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming CACC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament and will take on No. 6 Post at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Newman Center.
