PHILADELPHIA -- Senior guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 18 points and senior forward
DeAngelo Horn (Detroit) added 16, leading five Cougars in double figures as Caldwell men's basketball earned its sixth straight win, an 89-78 CACC triumph over Chestnut Hill at Sargenti Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars led by as many as 19 in the second half at 57-38 with 18:12 to play. But the Griffins (8-15, 6-10 CACC) whittled the lead into single digits, closing to within seven at 70-63 with just under eight minutes left.
After the teams traded baskets, a big three-pointer by Horn on the Cougars' next possession began a 10-2 run that put CU (12-12, 10-7 CACC) up by 15 with just over four minutes to play to secure the victory.
Junior guards
Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Todd Rochelle (Laurelton, N.Y.) added 13 and 12 points, respectively, and freshman forward
Terence Thompson also collected 12.
Evans notched eight rebounds and five assists, while Rochelle's seven assists were a game-best.
The win gave Caldwell sole possession of third place in the CACC standings; the top eight teams advance to the CACC Tournament and the top four host quarterfinal games on March 3. Caldwell University hosts the semifinals and finals on March 7-8 at the Newman Center.
Amari Dow led all scorers in the game with 19 for CHC.
Caldwell next hosts Post on Tuesday at 7:30 at the Newman Center.
