Cardenas Nets Three As Women's Soccer Dominates Mansfield, 6-0, In Opener

Gervais, Reyes, Ballesteros Also Rally, Gaminara Earns Record-Breaking Shutout

MANSFIELD, Pa. -- Senior forward Rosio Cardenas (Forked River, N.J.) scored three goals and added an assist and three other Cougars scored as Caldwell women's soccer earned a dominating season-opening 6-0 win at Mansfield at MU Soccer Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars struck early and often, with freshman Briana Reyes (Elizabeth, N.J.) scoring in the fifth minute and Cardenas putting in the first of her hat trick in the eight minute. Last year's CACC Player of the Year, senior Taina Gervais (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) assisted on Reyes' goal then scored one of her own in the 28th minute as the Cougars (1-0) outshot the Mounties, 13-1, before intermission.

It was more of the same in the second, as tallies by Cardenas in the 48th and 59th minutes put CU up 5-0. Freshman Juliana Ballesteros (Union, N.J.) capped the scoring in the 80th minute.

Senior GK Ariana Gaminara (Las Vegas) notched her 20th career solo shutout, breaking the Cougars' career record formerly co-held by Richelle Morse from 2002-2006. Gaminara had to make just one save for the clean sheet, as the Cougars outshot the Mounties 33-2 in the match.

Junior defender Lea Masching (Salzburg, Austria), freshman forward Jocelyn Downing (Keene, N.H.) and sophomore midfielder Melissa Pires (Elizabeth, N.J.) also had assists in the game.

Serenity Esterline and Angel Gule had six saves each for Mansfield.

The Cougars visit Molloy on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in their next action.
