CALDWELL, N.J. -- When
Lexi Peto (Toms River, N.J.) scored three goals in a reserve role as a freshman in 2021 and followed up with a team-best six markers in her sophomore season, including a total of four game-winners in those two years, she was looking like the next in a line of all-time top scorers in Caldwell women's soccer history. And while a devastating injury before the 2023 season and another last year kept her out of action except for three contests in 2024, Peto persevered and has fought her way back, setting her sights on helping this year's squad reach new heights.
Peto graduated with her degree in Art Therapy and has begun an MBA program as she gives it one more go on the pitch as a team captain. She spoke with us leading up to tomorrow's opening game at Mansfield, where last year she headed in the game-tying goal to give CU a late draw with the Mounties.
What is your main goal for your team this season, both on and off the field?
My main goal for this season is to build strong chemistry and consistency. How the team handles challenges will be just as important as our wins. I also want to create a culture of respect and inclusion where everyone feels valued. The team's ultimate goal is to win a CACC championship, and for every player to walk away having grown both on and off the field.
What is a team motto or a core value that will drive your team this season?
The team's core value this season is selflessness. I believe the team's greatest strength comes from working for each other, not just for ourselves. Every effort is made with the team's success in mind. By committing to this mindset, we create a culture where every contribution matters, and our bond becomes the driving force behind everything we accomplish.
What is the one thing you want fans to know about your team?
We play for something bigger than ourselves. Every time we step on the field, we bring grit, heart, and a commitment to each other. The team always works selflessly and is dedicated to representing our school and the Caldwell community with Cougar pride. Fans can always count on us to give our all, no matter what.
Who is a player on your team that we should be watching out for this season, and why?
It's impossible to single out just one player to watch this season. The team's strength comes from every person; every player is ready to compete and give their all. The players on the sidelines also provide energy and encouragement. When we come together, we are unstoppable.
What is one personal goal you're striving for this season?
My personal goal for the season is to stay healthy and play a full season. After multiple knee surgeries, I am determined to make the most of every opportunity to contribute. As a senior captain, I am also focused on leading by example through my effort and attitude, while helping my teammates reach their full potential.
What are you most looking forward to in your first season as a team captain?
What I'm most looking forward to as a first-time captain is the opportunity to lead and inspire my teammates. I want to help create a positive team culture, encourage everyone to give their best, and support each player. I am excited to lead by example and help my teammates grow, and I look forward to building strong connections and celebrating achievements like a CACC championship with the team.
After you graduate, what are you hoping to do next?
I recently graduated in the spring of 2025 and am now pursuing my master's in counseling with a concentration in art therapy. I feel lucky to have had an additional year to play due to an injury, which is allowing me to continue my education and play one more season. After completing my degree, my goal is to become an art therapist, using creativity as a tool for healing and growth.
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your team or this season that we haven't asked about?
I want people to know that the team is something truly special. This includes not only the players but also the coaching staff, the athletic department, and the athletic trainers. Caldwell is a community with a lot of heart, and I encourage everyone to come out and support all the school's sports teams.Â
