NORTH WALES, Pa. -- Senior LF-1B
Liam Lombardi (Stony Point N.Y.) had three and three RBI in the doubleheader, but a two-run, seventh-inning rally gave Chestnut Hill a walkoff win in the nightcap to gain a sweep of its CACC baseball doubleheader with Caldwell, 10-0 and 5-4, at Hostelley Field on Wednesday.
In the opener, the Cougars were limited to three hits by Griffin pitching, two by Lombardi.
In the nightcap, trailing, 3-0, the Cougars put together a four-run fifth to take the lead. After junior RF
Jimmy Kurtz (Buena, N.J.) started the inning with a single, one out later, consecutive singles by sophomore catcher
Akkash Santiago (Toms River, N.J.) and sophomore CF
Christian Petino Jr. (Flemington, N.J.) plated a run, a walk to junior shortstop
Christian Rinick (Marlton, N.J.) loaded the bases. Lombardi then unloaded them with a bases-clearing, three-run triple that put the Cougars (16-17, 9-13 CACC) in front.
That lead held until the bottom of the seventh and final frame, when three singles and two hit by pitches, including the second with the bases loaded, gave the host Griffins (17-14, 12-8) the victory.
Senior righty
Brandon Scalisi (New City, N.Y.) pitched three scoreless, one-hit relief entering the seventh, and got the leadoff hitter for the first out. But after two singles, he was replaced and was the hard-luck loser when the next three batters reached to push across the tying and winning runs.
The Cougars next host Georgian Court in a CACC doubleheader on Friday at Kiwanis Oval at a special noon start time.
