CALDWELL, N.J. -- Senior 2B
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) had six hits and scored six runs and senior SS
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) had a single, double, triple, home run and six RBI in the twinbill as Caldwell softball split a pair of games with CACC rival Holy Family on Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Athletic Field.
With the game one win, Caldwell (23-22, 12-8 CACC) secured a spot in the CACC Tournament, which begins play on Saturday.
In the opener, the Cougars got on the board early and often, plating two in the first on an RBI triple by Tavaska and the first of three game one hits by senior 1B
Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine). Then in the second, the hosts broke it open with a five-run frame, with RBI hits by Tavaska, Martin and freshman 3B
Lindsay Oller (So. Plainfield, N.J.), an RBI groundout by freshman RF
Lexi Weiss (Norristown, Pa.) and an error.
Sophomore righthander
Katie O'Connor (Charlottesville, Va.) did the rest, spinning a nifty six-hitter, allowing just one (unearned) in the complete-game effort for her team-best 11th win of the season.
In game two, it was the Tigers (19-21, 12-10) who jumped out to the early lead, scoring in each of the first four innings to lead 8-2. Caldwell kept battling back, a three-run fourth capped by an RBI single by sophomore LF
McKenzie Nazionale (Ontario, Calif.) making it an 8-5 game. After HFU went back up by six at 11-5, Tavaska's three-run home run and Oller's double in the sixth cut the deficit to 11-9. Caldwell would get the tying runs on base with two out in the ninth, but couldn't push them across.
Vondracek reached base in eight of nine plate appearances in the doubleheader, with a walk and hit by pitch to go with her 6-for-7 day.
The Cougars host Georgian Court on Thursday, needing wins in both games to secure the #4 seed and home playoff series in the first round of the CACC Tournament on Saturday.
